A Good Day

As my father was mostly behind the camera, there are very few pictures of us together within the frame. I turn instead to the photos he took of me. What does my return gaze, my expressions, gestures, and posture tell me about my feelings towards him? When he stood infount of me, and I him. What does his choices of location, occasion, and composition tell me about how he felt about me?

My father's photos conveyed a preference for documenting the family on days out with beautiful backdrops, and sibling interactions over traditional celebrations.

It is in the Super 8 films that an emotional dialogue between us emerges: a collaboration between father and daughter, where something intimate and almost magical unfolds from the interplay between the observer and the observed. My father’s gaze behind the camera meets mine, creating a dialogue across time, giving me the reassurance that I didn’t know I had been searching for.
